Accidents Whilst Abroad or on Holiday
If you have an accident abroad, not only will it spoil your holiday, but it may leave you with financial and legal problems to deal with. Legal problems abroad can be complicated and expensive, and you need to make sure you are fully informed about anything you decide to do to claim back costs or compensation if you have been injured in an accident abroad. Whatever your circumstances, you can ask advice from our team of specialist personal injury solicitors** who will help advise you on the next steps to take.
Make an Accident Abroad Claim
Even if your travel insurance covers you for medical bills, you will still have excess fees to pay, and your insurance may not cover smaller claims. Your solicitor** will be able to advise you on whether you may be able to get some or all of these costs back, if you consider that your injury or accident was not your fault. It may be complicated to claim against a hotel or company abroad – you may need to pursue your claim in that country’s court system and our lawyers will be able to advise you.
Make sure you keep all receipts and documentation from any accidents, interactions with police or medical establishments or doctors abroad. You may need these later if you decide to make a personal injury claim after an accident abroad.
If you have been involved in a car accident abroad which was not your fault, then you may have been given a European Accident Statement. Make sure you only sign the EAS if you are sure you understand its contents. If you were driving a hire car, you may need to report any accident to the local police while you are still on holiday. You may be advised to contact your local British embassy or consul. You may be able to telephone our solicitors** from your holiday destination if you need urgent legal advice, and upon your return, if you think you have a case to make a personal injury claim, make an appointment to see a lawyer who will be able to examine your case and see whether it will be possible to get compensation for you.
